I loved the Sega Dreamcast, but apparently very few others did. One game that stood out was Rez; a musical audio visual event, a shooter where the terrain and enemies react to the way you play, all the while generating a hearty techno electronic synth-tastic soundtrack. It’s as close a game can get to being a piece of art.
Graphically it has a wonderful Tron-like minimalist style with wire frames and vector graphics in beautiful HD its visuals are timeless.
The main reason I love Rez HD is the way it is able to simulate synaesthesia – a real life mash-up of senses, the warming stimulation of one sense by another (eg, hearing sound through seeing or imagining colour through sound). Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky (hello art class circa 1996!) was affected by this phenomenon and related the act of painting to creating music.
I think I understand this quite well as I’m never designing without music or sounds around me.
Get HD, turn the lights off, crank the Bang & Olufsen up and play some Rez HD on your Xbox 360 now!
